"In April 1969, nine years after he had begun his songwriting career, Irving Berlin announced: 'We depend largely on tricks, we writers of songs. There's no such thing as a new melody... Our work is to connect the old phrases in a new way. so that they will sound like a new tune. Did you know that the public, when it hears a new song, anticipates the next passage? Well, the writers who do not give them 'something they are expecting' are those who are successful'. That is also what the interpreter of a Berlin song must do. He must freshen its effect, renew its original capacity to surprise, and frustrate our melodic expectation - the performance must be even more inventive that what we anticipate. And all this must be accomplished without losing the Berlin melody." - Lawrence D. Stewart.
