Michigan, A place so magical, we may never know its true wonders. What is it that always seems to bring people here, and what is it that makes them stay? Does it have something to do with the extreme magnetic pull of the 45th parallel, the largest fresh water source on the planet, or the electric copper found in the Porcupine Mountains? It always seems there are more questions than answers. I can tell you that I am just as emotional listening to Elvin Jones, and Faruq Z Bey, as I am watching Barry Sanders, or Joe Dumars. There are so many different kinds of people that cross paths in Michigan. It is no wonder people that have changed the world have come from this very spot the Source calls home. It is so difficult to state how important Michigan is to ALL modern music worldwide, it is why I believe it is so grossly overlooked. I cannot in a few paragraphs give an accurate portrait of just what I mean. But if you want to start somewhere, there is a Wikipedia page on just a FEW of the artists who are responsible for laying the foundation of what we all are listening to today. For real. With the Source Of Light & Power's twelfth release, we bring you our very first release with another artist, Donovan Boxey. Donovan was born in Michigan, is a Central Michigan University graduate, plays multiple reed instruments, flutes, and guitar. He also is a current member of Northwoods Improvisers, and has released two records with them, as well as a CD with other Northwoods member Dominic Bierenga. While this is Donovan's first release with Mitch and I, we have been playing and recording together for over five years. It is an honor to play this music, which is commonly known as “Jazz”, or in current times, “Black American Classical Music.” There was no other music like it on the planet, it was born here, and it is taken most seriously worldwide. I suggest you look into it.
