This conception of the instrument renders it not so much as a “set” of disparate elements with separate and determined roles, but as one seamless entity; a living, breathing being for rhythm, (of course), but also for melody, harmony, texture, and yes, narrative. In asking the listener to answer the questions posed by its divergent timbres and unknowable tones, the drum set can visit sonic countries beyond the reach of uniform sound and precise pitch. I’ve been on the path to these worlds for quite a while now. Still have a ways to go.
