Recorded on September 8th, 1957 for broadcast on the BBC. The extracts are linked by light-hearted narration.
Includes 8-page booklet with notes and a brief synopsis in English only. No libretto.
The opera was composed and first performed in 1824 as "Emilia di Liverpool" adapted by an unknown librettist from the play "Emilia di Laverpaut" by Stefano Scatizzi. Donizetti revised the opera in 1828 with a modified libretto by Giuseppe Checcherini and retitled "L'Eremitaggio di Liwerpool". This recording, despite its title, is an abridged version of the revised (1828) version, and is based on a concert given by the RLPO (conducted by Fritz Spiegl) on 12 June 1957 as part of the celebrations for the 750th anniversary of the granting of a charter to the city of Liverpool.
