Ustad Bismillah Khan is a virtuoso without peer on the shehnai, and is the acknowledged Grand Master of this Indian Instrument, to which he has devoted his life. Hailing from an illustrious family of renowned shehnai players, he gave his first public performance in 1930, at the "All Indian Music Conference" in Allahabad, while he was barely 14. He has won several awards and titles include the title of "Akhil Bharatiya Shehnai Chakravarty" from the National Cultural Organization and the most coveted "Padma Vibushan" from the Government of India. Ustad Bismillah Khan's music is filled with majesty and brilliance and an abundance of color, texture and beauty. His improvisations are magical in their essence with passages incomparably sweet, melancholic and joyous. The vibrant sound of Bismillah Khan's shehnai has captured the imagination of audiences the world over for more than five decades and continues to mesmerize them.
